Women's army corps celebrates 44th anniversary

The Guyana Defence Force today observed another milestone marking 44 years of existence of its Women’s Army Corps.

Celebrations commenced with a Thanksgiving service officiated by Elder Ruth Lee at the Auditorium at Base Camp Ayanganna. Attendees included male soldiers, GDF veterans and representatives from the other disciplined services.

The sermon’s focus was the story of two female Bible characters, Queens Esther and Vashti. Elder Lee highlighted and compared the two personalities , and urged the females present to inculcate the values of Esther  whose strongest qualities were humility and submissiveness to God’s will.

Chief of Staff Commodore Gary Best, in an anniversary message read by Midshipman Shenel Europe, lauded the work of the women who form a significant percentage of the Force and have contributed to every area of its development.

A seminar, examining an array of issues pertaining to the development of women , as well as a debating competition will be among the activities to mark this year’s anniversary. Additionally, members of the Corps will host a feeding programme at the Ruimveldt Children’s Home.

A cocktail reception will also be held during which a number of female veterans will be honoured .
