The students of the inaugural Leader Sergeants Course, which commenced last October, recently concluded a 12 day Field Tactical Exercise which tested their ability to command in the different phases of war.

The exercise composed of the Open Country Warfare, Close Country Warfare and Internal Security phases and was conducted in the jungle area between Ituni and the Tacama Savannahs.

Chief of Staff Commodore Gary Best visited the aspirants during the exercise and on completion of observations and interactions with staff and students, was satisfied that they displayed a good level of understanding of all they have been taught, and as such have met the required standards.

It is the first time that the Guyana Defence Force is training personnel to graduate to the rank of Sergeant from the newly established Sergeants’Academy.

The course is now in its final stages and will focus of refining the aspirants in military leadership and administration. COS Best will decorate all the successful students with the Sergeant stripes, when they graduate next month.

The establishment of the Leader Sergeants Course was driven by a need to develop those middle management skills to serve across the force and to provide opportunities for those with the academic skills , and who may be overqualified for the Basic Recruit Course but under qualified for the Standard Officer Course .
