Sixteenth regional military conference guyana/brazil

The Guyana Defence Force hosted a delegation from the First Jungle Infantry Brigade for the Sixteenth Regional Military Conference Guyana/Brazil at the Savannah Inn, Lethem from Wednesday 2010-10-06 to Friday 2010-10-08.  The Conference  location is rotated annually between Guyana and Brazil.

The Brazilian delegation was led by Brigadier General FRANKLIMBERG De Freitas and comprised Col Wilson Mendes LAURIA, Lt Col Jose Arnon Dos Santos GUERRA, Lt Col Osmar B SOUZA JR, Major REGIS Rodrigues Nunes, Maj Marcos AMERICO Vieira Pessoa and 2Lt Michael Marcelo ZAGURY Reis De Souza.

The Guyanese delegation led by Col George Lewis, comprised Maj Sherwin Anderson, Maj Delbert George, Maj Meer Khan and Capt Eon Murray.

Discussions focused on a number of security matters relating to the Guyana Brazil border including transnational crime, cross border trade and the security challenges posed by the recently opened Takutu River Bridge and the road linking Lethem and Georgetown.  Additionally, a number of agreements were concluded and signed. These included the sharing of information between the two Armies as it relates to border matters and sporting exchanges between the Guyanese troops stationed at Lethem, Guyana and the Brazilian troops stationed at Bon Fim, Brazil.

The members of the Brazilian delegation will be hosted at a cocktail reception by the Chief of Staff on Thursday evening and will depart Guyana on Friday.
