Inaugural Leader Sergeant Course opens

altIn a history making moment, the Guyana Defence Force on November 21 declared open the inaugural Leader Sergeants Course #1 which will train 25 aspirants to graduate to the rank of Sergeant  from the Force’s first ever  Sergeants Academy  located at Base Camp Stephenson .  The training has a six month duration and will include stints at BC(S) , the Jungle and Amphibious Training School (JATS) at Makouria , the Colonel John Clarke Military School at Tacama and at BC(A).

Chief of Staff Commodore Gary Best has said that the design and implementation of the course was driven by a need to develop leaders at the middle management level to serve across the Force, to provide opportunities for young men and women with academic skills and to hone those skills into leadership outcomes at the level of Sergeant. He also observed that the course is aimed at capturing those young men and women who are over qualified for the Basic Recruit Course and under qualified for the Standard Officers Course.

As he addressed those gathered at the official opening ceremony, Cdre Best underscored the importance of the Sergeant, which he said is considered the backbone of the military. He told the “Aspirants” that successful completion of the course will enable them to lead their subordinates in the absence of an officer, which he said is a critical quality in any sergeant.

“As a leader Sergeant, you will be expected to do the right thing when unsupervised  , as a leader sergeant you will be expected to supervise when unsupervised – and as a leader sergeant you will be expected to uphold the standards of the Guyana Defence Force,” he implored. He also charged that the Aspirants, “stay resolute, be firm, be eager to learn and be ready to serve.”

Major Joslyn Assanah , Officer Commading of the Course , stated that training at this level is meant to develop competence thereby strengthening  the operational link between the Officer Corps and the Other Ranks, via a professional Senior Non  Commissioned Officers Corps, one fully cognisant of its      leadership role and responsibilities and equipped to execute its duties. Major Assanah is ably assisted by Lieutenants Marvin Simpson , Sherwin Scipio and Lloyden Layne as  Principal Instructors  and Staff Sergeants Leyland Liverpool and Selwyn Douglas are the Syndicate Instructors while SSGT Travis Worrel is the School Sergeant Major .

Training will encompass a number or areas including Core   Military Skills, Military Leadership Studies ,  Military History , Military Law and Administration . Students will also engage in a number of Practical and Field Tactical exercises.

For the first time, the Chief of Staff Leadership Star will be awarded as well as prizes for the Best graduating student, best Military Knowledge , Best Shot , Best Drill and Best Fitness .
